GEC provides a firm and broad data-base for viewing environmental issues from a larger, holistic perspective and for formulating programmes and policies. Besides this, wherever it undertakes fundamental research and basic studies in the field of environment such as salinity, bio-diversity and coastal benchmark surveys, the reports and findings are published and communicated to the publics concerned as well as generally. It also communicates its findings and perceptions to increase general awareness, to mobilise opinion and support action in the preservation and restoration of environment and ecology. It publishes 'Parisar', an interactive journal in Gujarati, besides a number of publications on specific issues, both in Gujarati and English. It compiles and issues progress reports which highlight areas of progress and achievement as well as increasing concern.

GEC has established a Geographical Information System Unit to co-ordinate its work, with the Environmental Systems Research Institute , internationally reputed for its GIS know-how. This project aims at developing and inducting a GIS- based Relational Database System for the ecological data of Gujarat. This will enable and support informed decision-making at all levels. It will, of course, place GEC in a crucial and central position as a provider of data from an ever-growing and reliable database with up-to-date systems for collection, storage and delivery. It will enable a wider and quicker access to users and help improve the quality of data from providers. Starting with web-site on environment, GEC will develop a state-of-art Centre of Environmental Information.
