|
Gujarat Ecology Commission has been entrusted with the Evaluation work of various activities undertaken by various Forest Development Agencies in the State. Under National Afforestation Programme, Government of India, in the Ministry of Environment and Forest, provides approval and financial assistance to the projects, submitted by the Forest Development Agencies. These projects mainly focus on bringing degraded forest areas under tree cover by involving local community in the entire process. The highlight of NAP project is active involvement of the communities at all levels of its execution. GEC has completed evaluation of implementation of NAP Project during the year 2006-07, 2007-08 of Jamnagar, Rajokot, Junagadh, Bhavanagar. |

- Mangroves are salt tolerant plants growing on the coastal zone in the inter tidal area, and in estuaries of rivers.
- These plants occur in the world in tropical and subtropical areas.
- The Mangroves in Gujarat are second only to the Mangroves in the West Bengal on the East Coast in terms of area, occurring in about 936 sq. km.
- GEC has undertaken eco-restoration of mangroves covering about 6000 ha area along Gulf of Kachchh, Gulf of Khambhat and other stretches
