State of Environment Report (SoE).

Objectives

1. Salinity Ingress, water depletion, denudation, impact of check dams on the socio economic life of the people.
2. Industrial pollution with a special emphasis on the hotspots such as Vapi, Ankleshwar and Nandesari. Indoor pollution both, rural and urban areas.
3. In general and with emphasis on fragile ecosystems.
4. The impact of the enhanced economic activity in the coastal area and its effects on both human habitation and environmental conditions.

Description of project

The Commission had been entrusted with the task of preparing the State of Environment Report (SoE) for the State of Gujarat. There is a state level Steering Committee chaired by the Principal Secretary, Forest & Environment Department to guide and monitor the SoE processing. Various government departments have designated nodal officers to GEC for the purpose. SoE 2005has already been published. The Report has received wide acclamation from various Govt. & Non Govt. institutions, Private Consultant etc.

mangroves

Eco-restoration of mangroves

- Mangroves are salt tolerant plants growing on the coastal zone in the inter tidal area, and in estuaries of rivers.

- These plants occur in the world in tropical and subtropical areas.

- The Mangroves in Gujarat are second only to the Mangroves in the West Bengal on the East Coast in terms of area, occurring in about 936 sq. km.

- GEC has undertaken eco-restoration of mangroves covering about 6000 ha area along Gulf of Kachchh, Gulf of Khambhat and other stretches
