Development of Wetland Area, Nani Kakrad

Objectives

1. To develop comprehensive study report in context of environment and ecological safeguards for Thol Wetland Bird Sanctuary
2. To promote and strengthen management perspective for the Thol Wetlands.
3. To Study and documents ecological and environmental parameters including water analysis. 
4. To identify the Impacts of Industrial influents on water and biodiversity of the areas
5. To identify the probable habitat change impacts on the Bird population of the area.

Description of project

Nanikakrad is one of the 8 wetlands present in Gujarat. Ministry of Environment and forest Government of India initiated the action plan to develop this wetland as one of he important wetlands as this area is visited by 80 different species of migratory and non migratory birds. In this context Gujarat Ecology commission Gandhinagar collaborated along with Sangarsh Seva Sanstha (An NGO) to carry out the project activities among the local community present in the wetland area towards conservation of this wetland.

mangroves

Eco-restoration of mangroves

- Mangroves are salt tolerant plants growing on the coastal zone in the inter tidal area, and in estuaries of rivers.

- These plants occur in the world in tropical and subtropical areas.

- The Mangroves in Gujarat are second only to the Mangroves in the West Bengal on the East Coast in terms of area, occurring in about 936 sq. km.

- GEC has undertaken eco-restoration of mangroves covering about 6000 ha area along Gulf of Kachchh, Gulf of Khambhat and other stretches
