To Increase Mangroves cover in the district, GEC has proposed a Mangrove plantation project to Ministry of Environment & Forest, New Delhi under. The MoEF has granted proposal to carry out 300 ha of Mangroves through active involvement community. The Commission alongwith Dandi Tavar Kantha Vikas Samiti, Dandi, ta: Olpad, Di: Surat (A Community Based Organsistaion) has developed 300 of Mangroves at Dandi, Ta: Olpad, Di: Surat through active involvement of community during the year 2007-08. |

- Mangroves are salt tolerant plants growing on the coastal zone in the inter tidal area, and in estuaries of rivers.
- These plants occur in the world in tropical and subtropical areas.
- The Mangroves in Gujarat are second only to the Mangroves in the West Bengal on the East Coast in terms of area, occurring in about 936 sq. km.
- GEC has undertaken eco-restoration of mangroves covering about 6000 ha area along Gulf of Kachchh, Gulf of Khambhat and other stretches
