Gujarat Ecology Commission is introduced Public Private Partnerships model in the filed of community based Mangrove plantation first time in the state, in which corporate partner is responsible for funding and monitoring, while Community Based Organization (A Village level Organization) is share the responsibility of project implementation and Commission played role as Facilitator. GEC along with CBOs had developed total 1490 ha Mangrove Plantation through active involvement of Coastal Community and corporate partners in the Surat, Bharuch, Kachchh and Bhavanagar districts of the State. - Mangroves are salt tolerant plants growing on the coastal zone in the inter tidal area, and in estuaries of rivers.
- These plants occur in the world in tropical and subtropical areas.
- The Mangroves in Gujarat are second only to the Mangroves in the West Bengal on the East Coast in terms of area, occurring in about 936 sq. km.
- GEC has undertaken eco-restoration of mangroves covering about 6000 ha area along Gulf of Kachchh, Gulf of Khambhat and other stretches
