GEC is a platform
for providing information and other inputs which are needed to
develop a policy and approach for conservation and sustainable
development. At the same time, it undertakes, on its own and in
collaboration with other agencies, initiatives for the protection
of ecosystems under threat and restoration of ecologically degraded
zones. This is done through trial and demonstrative projects,
which establish benchmarks for future replication.
Concurrently
with this, the Commission works to increase awareness and sensitivity
regarding environmental protection and preservation so as to provide
a broad base for public opinion to develop a conservation ethos
in the State. It is, therefore, a communicator on the issues of
environment and conservation and a vehicle for information and
analysis through the media, by publications, workshops and seminars.
It gains from the strength of its data base and the independence
of its status. GEC uses the best available expertise and ensures
continuous consultations with all stake-holders for effective
performance.
The Commission
and its secretariat
play many roles and undertake diverse responsibilities.
A multi-disciplinary and interactive team of full-time professionals
provide GEC with expertise in ecology, forestry
and marine biology as well as regional planning, economics and
other social sciences, communication and finance. It acts as a
reliable repository and source of data. It also has a direct feel
of the main areas of ecological interest and concern in Gujarat,
geographically as well as environment-wise.
The role of the
Commission is thus, challenging and difficult, and at the same
time, rewarding and very much worthwhile. Its approach has been
by and large one of education and persuasion, encouraging consultation
and dialogue . The Commission tries to take issues out as far
as possible, from the "either ....or" or " x versus y" format
and molds attitudes towards consensus and co-operation. There
is enough conflict and confrontation in the area because of diverse
agencies and activities being promoted or pursued. The Commission
tries not to enter this arena of controversy or antagonism, or
to add to this tension. Over the years, GEC has developed an approach
to a course of action which enables it to play this conciliatory
and constructive role.
